For as long as I have known him, Phil Brescia has been a devout Catholic who loves and lives his faith. But unlike the white-eyed drone honeybee, he’s not blind to the reality around him and thus forced to live mindlessly stranded in the hive.

Like the biblical Jacob, Phil has been willing, perhaps even eager, to wrestle with God and his faith, if only to fulfill a personal quest to understand both of them better. That intimate drive for understanding has produced his first book, “A Path of Sorrows.”

A fundamental tenet of Catholicism is that Jesus, while on earth, was fully and equally human and divine. Phil’s book gives us a gritty and sober view of Christ’s Passion, and in it, we see God’s Son struggling to fulfill His divine mission while saddled with the burden of bodily and emotional frailty common to all God’s creatures. We may know how the story ends, but getting there is not easy.

G.K. Chesterton once noted that Christianity had not been tried and found wanting — rather, it had been found difficult, and therefore left untried. The journey Jesus takes down Phil’s “Path of Sorrows” is a stark reminder of how difficult a task the Founder of the faith faced in opening the door of heaven to us all, and the challenge we must accept if we dare following in His footsteps.
